About Staff Selection Commission (SSC)
Staff Selection Commission is an organisation functions under the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT). It is erstwhile known as Subordinate Services Commission which is constituted by the Government of India on 4th November 1975. Later on 26th September 1997 it has been reorganised and renamed as Staff Selection Commission.
Further it has been redefined and amalgamated under the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions on 21st May 1999. The Staff Selection Commission which is functioning now has came into existence after that amalgamation and functions extensively from 1st June 1999.
In order to maintain good administration this commission has been divided into Seven Regions and Two Sub-Regions. The regional office is headed by Regional Director and all sub-offices are headed by the deputy director. It conducts seven major exams; among those CGL is the highly competitive. Also it conducts departmental exams for the promotion of staffs working in various offices and ministries.
Every year more than 5 million candidates take part in the exams conducted by SSC. However, all exams will be conducted only once in every year. It publishes a calendar for every year where candidates can find the schedule of all upcoming SSC exam 2017.
Combined Graduate Level Exam (CGL)
CGL is the most competitive exam conducted by Staff Selection Commission. It takes place once in every year and candidates with any graduate degree are eligible to participate in this exam. This exam will be conducted in four tiers, the first two tiers are written test. The exam pattern of Tier-1 and Tier-2 are objective and descriptive respectively. Combined Higher Secondary Level Exam

Stenographer Grade ‘C’ and ‘D’ Exam
The Stenographer exams are conducted for employing Stenographers in various central government institutions. The minimum education qualification to participate in this exam is 12th class pass. However, candidates just have this qualification are not eligible to secure job as a stenographer. They have to possess shorthand and typewriting skill as required by SSC standard. Junior Hindi Translator Exam

Multi Tasking Staff Exam

Departmental Exam
Similar to all other government exam SSC conducts departmental exams. These are for offering promotions for the employees who are already working in the central government organisations.
